Example Itinerary based on 8 people travelling together (4 nights)

1600 hrs Arrive at Yarn Market Hotel in Dunster on the northern edge of Exmoor National Park. Chaucer called it 'a village fair as is the rose in May'.
1830 hrs

Welcome reception provided by the hotel followed by a
3-course dinner.

0800 hrs Full buffet-style English breakfast at the hotel. The hotel will provide you with a packed lunch to eat during the day at an appropriate beauty spot.
0900 hrs Board your minibus to visit Tiverton, driving past Blundell's school where R D Blackmore was a pupil and which also forms the backdrop for the opening chapters of the book.
1000 hrs Travel to South Molton where Tom Faggus was based and then continue on to North Molton where he lived and worked in the smithy after marrying John's sister.
1200 hrs Heading towards Barnstaple you will cross the 13th-century bridge across the Taw where Tom Faggus performed one of his most daring acts of highway robbery. Perhaps stop for lunch here?
1400 hrs Visit Arlington Court, which is a National Trust property with a carriage museum and beautiful gardens.
1930 hrs 3-course dinner at the hotel.
0800 hrs Breakfast at the hotel and collect your packed lunch.
0900 hrs Set off to visit the historical port of Lynmouth via Blackmore Gate which was named after one of the author's ancestors.
1030 hrs Travel on to the Valley of the Rocks - a truly dramatic landscape where the moorland plunges into cliffs to meet the sea. Here you will see the Devil's Cheese Ring which is said to have sheltered Mother Melldrum, an old wise woman consulted by John Ridd when he was trying to win Lorna's affections.
1230 hrs The route back passes through the little village of Malmsmead by the side of Badgworthy Water where you will see the memorial stone to Blackmore placed there on the centenary of the book's publication.
1430 hrs Explore Doone Valley with the rocky Doone Gate at one end and the waterslide, down which John and Lorna escaped, at the other.
1530 hrs Finally visit Oare Church where John and Lorna were married and the famous shot through the window was fired by Carver Doone.
1930 hrs 3-course dinner at the hotel.
0800 hrs Breakfast at the hotel and collect your packed lunch.
0930 hrs Visit Porlock Weir and its neighbour Porlock which were both visited by John Ridd in the novel.
1130 hrs On to Watchet via Minehead. Here Lorna was kidnapped by the Doones and John went to search for the grave of her mother after her true identity had been discovered.
1400 hrs Back to Dunster for a visit to the magnificent Dunster Castle.
1930 hrs 3-course dinner at the hotel.
0800 hrs Breakfast at the hotel.
0900 hrs Visit the Exmoor towns of Exford and Dulverton - home of John's Uncle Reuben and cousin Ruth. Nearby Tarr Steps have connections with Mother Melldrum and John first saw Lorna as a child in the village of Exebridge.
1130 hrs Head back to the hotel, collect your luggage and check out.
